Imperial Network Blog

About twenty-five years ago, I used to host a website out of my house. It was terrible. Hand-coded HTML 4.1 Transitional, on every page. Hosted on a Pentium 90 running Debian and served over a residential cable line out of my basement. Annoying port-forwarding tricks were necessary to forward to port 8080, and all sorts of other goofiness.

In the interim, "Social Media", "Web 2.0", and myriad other centralizations of the internet ended the era of "the personal website".

Now, we live in a time where the internet is just about to restore the full end-to-end connectivity it was designed to have.

This website is hosted ONLY over IPv6. IPv4-only (legacy internet protocol) is not available to everyone anymore. Further, IPv6 (standard internet protocol) is available to more than 50% of the users on the internet, especially in the US. As such, I'm hoping that I can start a trend of IPv6-only content to accelerate the sunset of legacy IP.

You may be accessing this website over IPv4 anyway. There is a free service which forwards IPv6 HTTP traffic on behalf of IPv4-only hosts. Check if you're connecting over modern IP!

To this end, I'll share a blog of my various interesting adventures in making my home network free from legacy-IP.
